The WMB Chain Games: your chain, now a game

A side quest that got out of hand: while I was building 3D views of components, one experiment had a chain in it, and once you can grab a chain you don't stop. It's now a free playground at watchmy.bike/chain. It runs in your browser, on your phone too, and you don't need an account to play. It's from 🧪 WMB Labs, where I try things out.

Five modes

  • Gravity: grab the chain, throw it, watch it land in a heap

  • Animate: it runs round chainrings, a derailleur S-bend and shapes like a heart or a star

  • Text: type a word and every letter becomes a closed chain of real links, with a cinematic camera that flies through the letters

  • Drivetrain: a road 2×12 (Shimano Dura-Ace R9200) or an MTB 1×12; pedal, shift and watch the chain jump the cassette

  • Chainy: snake, with a chain. Oil drips make it grow and clean it, sand and rocks wear it out, and at 100% wear it seizes

Design your chain

In the Chain lab panel you pick the colours of the outer plates, inner links and pins, how dirty it is, your own engraving on the plates, and a neon glow with its strength and spread. Your design plays along in every mode.

With your account

  • Save your chains, as many as you like, and share one with a short link (or keep it private)

  • Put a design on your real chain: open your chain component in WatchMy.bike and pick it under Chain design. The card shows your chain in 3D, and your 3D bike uses it too

  • Screenshot (on a computer) saves just your chain as a transparent PNG with a small WatchMy.bike mark, ready to use anywhere

  • Chainy scores are saved, and your best and longest ride per board show up in the panel

Chainy's daily board and leaderboard

Daily gives everyone the same board for the day (the same oil, sand and rocks in the same places), so scores compare; it changes at midnight UTC. Daily games count for the leaderboard (Today, Week, All time), and you only appear there once you pick a leaderboard name, which you can hide again. Free play gives you a new board every game, for your own records.

Where to find it

The homepage has a Chain Games card and section, and inside the app there's a card in the sidebar. The help article explains every mode, and the blog post tells why and how I built it, with Claude as my pair programmer.

WatchMy.bike itself stays a maintenance tracker: nothing in your garage changes unless you put a design on your chain, and you never need to play anything to track your bikes.
